Motivation to ReCLAIM My Life

I found this motivational photo on Pinterest from a post by Skinny Bitch and it really struck right to the heart of my renewed initiative to lose the weight I lost last year and have since put back on…

I’ve printed it out and taped it to my bathroom mirror. I intend to read this every day and to keep the focus on my choices throughout the day.

I’m also going back on my juice fest because I felt great getting all those nutrients and it kicked all the cravings. Those damn cravings! I’m back in the thrall of them – burgers, pizza, pasta dishes, ice cream… everything chocolate!

The veggie garden is in full swing, so there’s a lot of variety very conveniently located. I have absolutely NO excuses not to do this.

Another area I’ve been slacking off in is my exercise. Last year I dedicated myself to doing the Beachbody Power 90. Well into that, with juicing, my energy levels soared and I added the C25K program. My weight loss started slowing down, but the inches were melting off, so who cares about pounds!

I started a walking group called the Foothills Mile Markers that meets every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday morning for two reasons. One, to help keep me motivated and accountable and two, to share what I’ve learned about nutrition and fitness to help others. Oh yeah, I forgot the third reason: TO HAVE FUN!

So, Tony Horton, once again, its you and me, bay-bee. Gonna be pushing PLAY when I get back from my walk to do the Sweat Circuit and Ab Ripper. I’ll do the Sculpt Circuit Tuesday, Thursday & Saturdays.

Please, God, I want to lose this extra weight, and I know how to do that, feels like You & I have done it a hundred times. But more than that, please help me to finally make the deep personal transformation to keep it off and make it a non-issue for the rest of my life. I pledge to help others every step of the way.

Nothing Changes if Nothing Changes

Turbo Jam – day 22 of 28 – people are starting to notice!

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results… Albert Einstein.

(Listening to Don Ross’ Afraid to Dance as I write this and it seems appropriate to the theme. I found this version on youtube and he explains what this song is about, if ya want to skip to the music, it starts about 3:20. I’m breaking out of my comfort zone to make real changes. Nothing changes if nothing changes, eh?)

I’m getting better, but I’m still yo-yo-ing a bit. So I’ve decided that if I want to make a real change and get serious about sticking to a healthy lifestyle and exercising regularly, then I’m going to make it my livelihood.  I’m far enough on my journey that I can confidently share what I’ve learned thus far with others. By helping others, I can help myself and I like that, a lot.

Thus I’ve signed up to be a Beachbody coach. I’ve been using Beachbody products for about 5 years now and I know they are effective.  What I like most is the company builds a cohesive offering of fitness plus nutrition plus support.

There are fitness programs for every taste and fitness level from total couch potato to workouts that would challenge a Navy Seal or Green Beret. This means that as we progress, there is another challenge to take us to the next level.

There are supplements and the tasty, popular Shakeology meal replacement shakes. They’ve just released a new 21-day total health program called the Ultimate Reset that works gently to sort of reset your body to the original factory settings, balancing the body’s oxygenation, alkalinity and performing a detox that is not colon-centric and won’t have you running to the bathroom all day. I’m going on this Reset myself soon, so I’ll be sharing my experience with that here.

And the support is beyond anything I’ve ever gotten in any corporation I’ve worked for. Whether you sign up as a free player or elect to join the Team Beachbody Club, there is amazing information, tools and interaction with people just where you are on your journey and who can answer any questions you may have.

The corporate philosophy can be summed up as “end the trend of obesity” with superior products and trainers. They’ve just removed two ingredients from the Shakeology formula because one can cause false positive results in professional athletes’ testing and the other is being removed because there is an environmental issue with sustainability. It is just that awareness and commitment to integrity that lets me know I am in the right company.

I’ve started a Facebook page if you’d like learn more about how I can help you can reach your goals. I’m not a salesperson, so I’ll never ask anyone to buy anything; my coaching is free and I’m happy to share what I’ve learned and what I am learning with everyone.

TurboJam!!! Beginner Level – Day 1 of 28

Received TurboJam from Beachbody in the mail yesterday. TurboJam was created by Chalene Johnson and is geared to be effective for every fitness level, from total beginner to quite the workout wiz.

The music for these workouts is total PAR-TAY! Really gets ya pumped. The 20 minutes was over before I knew it. The program is kind of a mix of high energy club dance and martial arts moves. The whole thing has 11 core moves and once you feel comfortable with you’re ready to party off the inches!

I did the Learn & Burn this morning – I feel like a seriously uncoordinated sock! Yet I was able to finish the whole work out with just a few modifications to the kicks because my hips have a real limited range of motion. Long boring story…

But just think what wonderful progress I’ll make and how each new personal victory will blossom into another – I’m soooo psyched!

March – Adding a fun new fitness regime

Happy Colors!

Good morning, Red Juice!

This made just under 32 oz of  juice

  • 1/4 head red cabbage
  • 1/2 cucumber
  • bunch parsley
  • 2 orange peppers
  • 2 stalks celery
  • 2 carrots
  • 1 pear
  • 1 apple
  • 1 lemon
  • 1 small piece ginger

About 3 years ago I was taking NIA classes in Flat Rock and had to discontinue. I loved NIA (Non-Impact Aerobics) because it is a full body hour-long workout, encorporating all your muscle groups and joints. After the hour you are both exhilarated and exhausted and yet there is no next-day stiffness or soreness as you expect with other bust your butt workouts. NIA is gentle, thorough and effective.

Dancin' With Denise

So I was thrilled to learn my teacher, Denise, a NIA black belt certified instructor, had produced her own dvd using NIA technique! I scurried up the mountain and bought one !

I put it in my player and the audio was messed up – a constant high pitched whine & Denise’s voice was garbled. Tried to play it on my computer and Media Player balked. A few days later, I tried it on a friend’s player and the dvd played just fine. Tried it in my machine again yesterday and ta-da! it works perfectly. Go figure, eh?

This is a hour long jazzy routine uses the soundtrack from Smokey Joe’s Cafe. Denise’s workout will be a nice addition to my joyful movement repitoire as I love the Power 90 regime, but after a while anything gets a little boring.

What I really love about NIA is you are taught to listen to your body. You can make the movements as deep or expansive as your body tells you it is comfortable with. Maybe today you bend to the ground, maybe just to your knees – its all up to how your body feels like moving right now. No competition with others, only yourself and only in this moment. How kind is that? And it is very effective in making your body happy, flexible and healthy when you continue the practice.

By the end of the hour I was ready to stretch and relax! If you’ve not heard of NIA, I suggest you check it out – I think you’ll love it, too!

Reboot 30 – Day 8

Not a good day today. Don’t know why, just one of those days.

Normally the people in my life find me disgustingly perky in the morning. Usually I sleep very deeply and well. I didn’t sleep well last night, kept waking up.

Seemed like every hour I was up, tossing & turning to find a comfortable position. I don’t feel like exercising, my quadriceps ache in both legs and for no good reason. Just going upstairs was a grunt, yet I haven’t upped any reps or otherwise stressed my legs.

I have a very slight headache just behind my left eye. I’m not hungry, I’m not thirsty, I’m kind of numb.

This is one of those times when ya gotta cowgirl up and do what you know you need to do.

So I put on a video recording of Tom Petty Live from Gainesville, FL – cranked it up and started dancing. Then I began doing my regularly scheduled exercise, (Power90 Cardio Circuit 3-4). I finished and felt a little better.

Made a juice of kale, broccoli, pineapple, cucumber, parsley, celery, carrots, apples, lemon & ginger and it tastes really, really good.

The day started out as rather grey and now it is sunny.

I’m still not firing on all cylinders, so to speak, but the headache is gone. Just one of those days.

2nd 60 – Day 24 – Push Ups

Gotta share this – I’m about to burst! Today, while doing my Power 90 Sculpt circuit this morning, I did the pushups on my toes !!!! This is big stuff!

When I began this journey, my idea of a good push up was either a fine brassiere  or ice cream treat  rather than a fitness move.

At first I could only do 5 regular in part one, 5 wide in part two and in part three you are supposed to do 10 wide, 10 close and 10 regular. Well, I did 5 wide, just sort of hunched my shoulders down 5 times for the close ones and then 5 regular.

After 64 days consistently following the P90 program, I could do 15 in each of part one & two and 10 of each style in part three. Although the close ones are still not pretty in form, I think they would still be classified as push ups…

So this morning, I just got the thought to do them from my toes. What a difference! Rather than feeling like all the power is in my shoulders and triceps, you can REALLY feel it in the abs/core area.

I have to admit, I’m back to doing 5 reps but that’s okay because now I know I’ll work up to the max if I just keep doing it.

Later in the morning, I took Shelby to Harmon Field for Day2Week5 of the C25K program. Warm up walk, jog 8 minutes (that’s eight minutes? Yes, I said eight minutes – I know, right?) walk 5, jog 8. It was tough but I did it (yea!)

My mind swung like a pendulum between feeling amazing that I was able to jog not uncomfortably for the prescribed time, then I found I was psyching myself out – thinking about Day 3 coming up on Friday – warm up walk for 5 minutes then jog for 20 minutes (!!).  Thinking I’ll never be able to do that. Then thinking, “Heck yes I can – I didn’t think I could do any of this!”  If I survive, I’ll tell ya all about it.

2nd 60 – Day 14 – Inches Not Pounds

Today, Sunday, is Progress Day.

Weighed in after staying off the scale most of the week. Imagine my dismay when I saw I was down only 1# – down is good, of course, but it is still one pound more than when I finished the juicing. And I still haven’t cracked that 30# goal.

However, getting that off my chest, I’m so steadily down in inches (yippee!) I can go into my closet and wear any damn thing I want. I can go to my jeans cabinet and pullout any pair I want. I can be picky because its not just what I can fit my fat ass into, its what do I feel like wearing and how does it show me off to best advantage?

So what’s up with the weight?  Something wrong with my scale? How can I lose that many inches and not be shedding pounds, too?

Of course, I started Googling and came across this photo & info and this is the first time I’ve really understood the fat vs muscle thing.

A person weighing 150 with 19% body fat is going to be much slimmer than a same height person weighing 150 with 35% body fat who will be more lumpy and dumpy.

The weight will come off in time as I continue eating mostly fruits & veggies and exercising. I am going to come up with another word for exercising, because the word exercise still has connotations of exertion, and duty, not joyful movement. I’ll think on that as Herb & I hike the Triple Fall and High Falls in Pisgah Nat’l forest today.
