Day 40 – Getting the fall garden ready

Standard

We lost so much food to deer this season. I do not mind sharing, but what they did was really criminal, at least it would be if they knew right from wrong…

No beans, and we’d planted some rare heirloom native black beans and speckled pole beans, too. Didn’t even get one sorry bean of either kind to use as seed next year – really disappointed about that. Maybe 4-5 cucumbers – out of a row 100′ long! No eggplant, not even 1. A small handful of brussel sprouts, only 3 broccoli plants out of a 100′ row survived – sheesh!

And we tried all kinds of things – Irish Spring soap hung about their nose level, human hair, dog hair, Herb’s urine (I think he did that just for some kind of manly thing…) A friend told us about some Swedish stuff called Plant Skyyd that we’re thinking of using next year.

Herb had been resisting putting up the electric fence this year because of a different planting scheme he had going on that required frequent mowing of the rye grass walking rows in between the veggie rows.

So, with planting the fall crops and wanting to keep the deer out, he’s invented this system for raising the electric wire 8′ off the ground to get the mower, tiller or even tractor into the garden unimpeded by the fence.

We put it together this weekend, wired it up this morning and it works perfectly (will post photos when I take my (charged) camera over tomorrow!)

Sure wish those deer would go after the morning glory – this monster is completely dominating one end of the front flower bed and completely engulfing the front railing. Yet it is soooo pretty in bloom, yes?

Day 39 – Finally reached 20!

Standard

I made it – 20 pounds! Woo-hoo! Gonna make an appointment to go on the Navitat zip line tour!

I have a bad habit of not filling in the right categories & tags, so i go back & update it when I notice it. The problem with this is then it thinks that later date is the post date, which I guess it is, yikes.

So today is Sunday, August 28 and it is Day 39 of the juicing program. and this is the veggie juice for today:

Half a small head of green cabbage, bunch parsley, 2 carrots, 2 celery stalks, 2 apples, 1 eggplant, 1 cucumber and ginger. Not shown: bunch kale & lemon, already in teh mouth of the juicer.

Day 37 – Weeeeeeeee!

Standard

Yep, I’m in a great mood today – still haven’t hit that magic 20# its either 1 or 2 #s’ away BUT I‘m down in inches!!

I spent this morning, after my workout but before shower, trying on all kinds of

I couldn't get these jeans buttoned & zipped 5 weeks ago!!! YeeeHaawww!

jeans I couldn’t even get into when I started this happy journey.  Two are already too big – I can actually take them off without unzipping them!

There are now 6 pair of jeans I can get into comfortably and 5 pair I have waiting to hug me gently as I move on down this road.

I got a 15% coupon from Belk’s in an email today and I take that as a sign to go buy a new pair of walking shoes, ’cause its time for Momma to kick things up a notch and really get on down the road!

Day 35 – Better Now!

Standard

My friend SusieD got inspired by my results and she’s started juicing, not as fanatical as moi, but hey, most any veggie juicing is healthy and if I’m any example, it really helps keep your appetite/blood sugars/cravings/whatever in check.

Sink o' Kale

SusieD came over after work and we raided the kale in the garden. I got a sink full. I’ll keep track of this and let you know how long it lasts for me. I get my main “green” juice from kale, so I use a lot.

When I finished washing the leaves and took them out of the sink, it was only about a 1/4 full of water. And this is more leaves than stems – so its alllllll good!

And SusieD was talking with another friend of ours, SusieS, and she & her hubby are trying juicing, too.

And I talked with my brother in Colorado and he and his partner also saw the movie Fat, Sick and Nearly Dead and now they’re juicing, too! It’s amazing.

This film was obviously an idea whose time had come – its sweeping the world and there’s so many websites,  blogs and FaceBook groups & pages. The biggest complaint I’m hearing is juicers are flying off the shelves and difficult to find/order – yeaaaaah!

Day 33 – Just Feeling Blue

Standard

Feeling like a Fish out of Water

Okay, so every day cannot be all hearts & flowers.

I woke up just feeling a half a bubble off plumb. I had to really force myself to do my Power 90 Sculpt routine strength training exercises this morning and immediately went to lay on the couch to watch the news. No energy today and my muscles feel like they’d like to go somewhere on vacation rather than carry my sorry ass around.

Waited for the dew to dry on the yard and mowed – on the steep parts I fell twice and once my feet almost went under the mower – not good at all. By the time I was done, I felt like I’d run a marathon and been beat with a bag of nickels. I inhaled about 16oz iced mint & thyme tea but still felt hot so I limped into a cool shower – that helped, but now, 2 1/2 hrs later, my face still feels hot.

I think it is just one of those days.

Then I remembered, I’ve not had my juice this morning. Not only that but it is almost 3:30 (!!) Excuse me…

Okay I’m back. Grabbed some veggies and made some juice. Put my feet up and

Kale, spinach, red banana peppers, apple, cuke, lemon, ginger, celery & carrots. This makes about 32 oz juice

watched judge Judy – love her! Shortly after, my friend SusieD came over to pick some kale. I sent her home with a big bagful and a bunch of yellow and red banana peppers, too. Yep, I’m feeling much better now.

What is truly remarkable is I forgot to “eat.” Who me? That’s never happened before. Changes are taking place, my friends, major changes, good changes!
